Dubai deploys drones to clean Metro and Tram stations
This water-saving solution cuts manpower and boosts worker safety
DUBAI’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is trialling drone technology to clean the facades of its Metro and Tram stations, marking a breakthrough in public transport maintenance.
The initiative, launched in partnership with Keolis MHI – the operator of Dubai Metro and Tram – aims to boost safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
By using drones to spray down exterior surfaces, the RTA hopes to eliminate the need for scaffolding and reduce occupational hazards.
Drones to clean Dubai stations
The switch to drones significantly reduces manpower. Traditional cleaning methods typically require up to 15 workers per station. In contrast, the drone-based system operates effectively with just eight. This represents a more than 50% drop in personnel needs, allowing cleaning teams to focus resources more efficiently across Dubai’s extensive public transport network.
Eco-friendly innovation
Beyond labour efficiency, the drones are helping conserve water – a key component of Dubai’s sustainability goals. Each cleaning cycle uses considerably less water than conventional approaches, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative. The technology also allows access to high or complex areas that are difficult to reach safely with manual equipment.
Blended approach ahead
While traditional methods still provide flexibility in certain cases, early trial results suggest drones could form a vital part of a hybrid cleaning model. RTA and Keolis MHI are evaluating the integration of both systems to strike a balance between effectiveness, environmental impact, and safety.
